GitHub has launched a free tier for its AI-powered code completion tool, GitHub Copilot, marking a significant expansion of its services. This free tier, integrated within Visual Studio Code, provides developers with up to 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month. Users can choose between two advanced AI models for their coding assistance: OpenAI's GPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which they can switch between in the Copilot settings. The tool aims to make advanced AI capabilities accessible to a wider range of developers and is designed to encourage people to upgrade to the paid subscription.

This announcement comes as GitHub celebrates reaching 150 million developers on its platform. With this free version, developers can use the AI editor to ask coding questions, explain existing code, or find bugs, with the option to make edits across multiple files. Copilot Chat is also available directly from the GitHub dashboard for free users. Furthermore, GitHub continues to offer free access to Copilot Pro accounts for students, educators, and open-source maintainers. The free tier requires a GitHub account and is accessible via a "Sign in to use Copilot for Free" button in VS Code.
