Apple AI Generates False News Summaries - 7d
Apple's new AI feature, "Apple Intelligence," is facing criticism for generating inaccurate news summaries. The BBC has formally complained to Apple after the AI's notification summarization incorrectly suggested that BBC News had published an article stating Luigi Mangione, a man arrested in the US for murder, had committed suicide. This false information was displayed to iPhone users as a notification summary. The BBC has emphasized the importance of their audience's trust in the accuracy of their reporting, stating that such misinformation is unacceptable and have contacted Apple to rectify the issue.
The issue of AI "hallucinating" news is not unique to Apple, but this case raises concerns about the reliability of AI in news aggregation. Similar issues have also been reported with the New York Times, which suggests this is a systematic problem with the summarization feature. In the past instances similar AI summarization issues have appeared with early versions of Google Bard. Apple has so far declined to comment on this specific issue.
