Uber has launched its first international robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi in partnership with WeRide. This marks a significant step in Uber's global expansion into the autonomous vehicle market and its strategy of collaborating with multiple autonomous vehicle companies. The service, initially operating with safety drivers, will utilize WeRide's autonomous vehicles, offering customers the option to book a robotaxi ride through the Uber app at prices comparable to UberX and Uber Comfort. Full driverless operation is targeted for 2025.
The initial launch will focus on routes between Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport, with expansion plans in the future. WeRide, a Chinese autonomous vehicle company, holds permits for driverless operation in several countries, including the UAE, Singapore, China, and the US. This collaboration allows Uber to leverage WeRide's existing technology and permits to quickly enter the international robotaxi market, reflecting Uber's broader goal of becoming a central platform for various autonomous vehicle providers. WeRide’s recent IPO also adds financial strength to this project.
