OpenAI is facing challenges with the development of its next flagship language model, codenamed Orion. Internal reports suggest that the improvement in quality from GPT-4 to Orion is significantly smaller than the leap from GPT-3 to GPT-4. Furthermore, Orion may not outperform its predecessor in tasks such as coding, raising concerns about the slowing rate of progress in AI model development. This slowdown is not unique to OpenAI, and other major AI labs are experiencing similar difficulties. The limited availability of high-quality training data is a major contributing factor, forcing OpenAI to explore new strategies, such as using synthetic data generated by AI models, to address the challenge and continue advancing its AI capabilities.
In response to the reported slowdown, OpenAI has reportedly established a "foundations team" to investigate ways to improve its models despite dwindling resources of high-quality training data. This team’s focus will be on new methods of development, rather than relying solely on the scaling approach that proved successful in previous iterations. This suggests a shift away from simply increasing data, training time, and model parameters, toward more innovative approaches to model optimization. The limited improvement seen in Orion, coupled with the potential for increased operational costs, may lead to a change in OpenAI’s strategy for future model releases.
Despite the reported slowdown in AI improvement, OpenAI continues to develop and enhance its existing products. Recently, OpenAI released updates for its ChatGPT desktop application for both macOS and Windows. The macOS update adds a new "Work with Apps" feature, enabling ChatGPT to read code from developer-focused applications such as VS Code and Xcode. This integration aims to streamline the coding process by allowing users to receive code suggestions directly from the ChatGPT app, although the chatbot cannot yet write code directly into other applications. The Windows app update now includes webcam support, text scaling, and customizable shortcuts, showcasing ongoing efforts to improve user experience and functionality.
